Finance Trustee (Treasurer)
Mothers' Union South West (CIO)
Voluntary Trustee Role | Remote
Are you a finance professional who enjoys building systems, improving processes and getting hands-on with financial management?
Mothers' Union South West is seeking a Finance Trustee (Treasurer) to help establish and shape a brand-new charity at a pivotal moment in its development.
Mothers' Union South West is a newly created Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO), separate from the central Mothers' Union charity, which will bring together eight dioceses across the South West of England under a single governance structure. Over time, individual diocesan charities and branch-level activities will transition into the new organisation, creating a more sustainable model that allows local volunteers to focus on fellowship, worship and community action. This is a pioneering project and a potential blueprint for the future of Mothers' Union across the UK.
As Finance Trustee (Treasurer), you will play a key role in establishing the financial foundations of the new charity, working alongside trustees, volunteers and the Mothers' Union central team to create systems, controls and reporting processes that are fit for purpose from day one.
We're looking for someone with:
• Financial qualifications or significant relevant finance experience
• Strong bookkeeping and financial administration skills
• Experience preparing, reviewing and interpreting management accounts
• Confidence using accounting software, particularly Xero
• The ability to explain financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues
• An interest in helping build a new organisation and shape its future
• A practising Christian faith and commitment to the values of Mothers' Union
What makes this role different?
Unlike many Treasurer positions, this role requires a hands-on approach. You will not only provide strategic oversight but will also help establish bookkeeping processes, maintain financial records, oversee routine financial reporting and support volunteers across the participating dioceses as the new organisation takes shape.
Time Commitment
• Monthly Board meetings during the first six months (approximately 1.5 hours)
• Additional Finance Committee meetings during the transition period
• Around 5 hours per month of routine bookkeeping, financial review and reporting activity
• Reading and preparation time for meetings
• Additional involvement during the first year while systems and processes are established
Key Dates
• Application deadline: Midday, Friday 19 June 2026
• First-stage interviews: Week commencing 29 June 2026
• Final interviews: Week commencing 6 July 2026
This is a voluntary, unpaid role with reasonable expenses reimbursed. Most meetings are held remotely, and applicants do not need to live in the South West.
If you are excited by the opportunity to build something new, use your financial expertise for good, and help shape the future of one of the UK's most established Christian movements, we'd love to hear from you.
Please note that it is an occupational requirement that applicants must me practising Christians.
