One of London’s leading Students’ Unions is seeking a Procurement and Carbon Compliance Manager for a new role. The position is permanent, part-time for 4 days per week. The role is offered on a hybrid basis with 2 days per week expected onsite in central London. The salary offered is £43,000 - £52,000 per annum plus an excellent benefits package and sector leading pension.
The SU serves more than 50,000 students and has around 120 staff. The campus is a thriving and diverse place with a range of services and facilities available for students, enabling them to enjoy their time and flourish whilst studying at University.
The role would best suit someone with some prior experience in a procurement role looking to step up to a manager level position. It will suit someone who can cope with the challenge of creating their own workload, targets, demonstrate ambition and wants to progress and develop.
You will work closely with the Director of Finance, developing an approach to sustainable procurement, helping to drive financial savings and reduce carbon emissions from the goods and services the SU buys. You will be lead champion of sustainability across the organisation. You will provide leadership and coordination to reduce the organisation’s environmental impact and ensure effective communication of the SU’s sustainability ambitions and progress to their staff, stakeholders and beneficiaries.
Key duties:
• Responsible for the development of a culture of sustainable procurement across the organisation that results in financial savings and a measurable reduction in the organisation’s environmental impact.
• Responsible for the development and delivery of the Students’ Union Sustainability Strategy.
• Develop a sustainable procurement policy for the Students’ Union and a toolkit for staff to support sustainable procurement practices.
• Provide leadership and direction to SU purchasers on procurement matters, adding value across the organisation and ensuring compliance with policy and governance rules.
• Champion the integration of sustainable practices into the procurement process to ensure that SU purchasing decisions support environmental, social, and economic goals.
• You will lead on Supplier Engagement and Collaboration to improve their sustainability performance. You will assess, monitor, and mitigate supplier sustainability risk throughout the relationship's lifecycle.
• Build relationships with stakeholders, enabling best procurement practices to be embedded into the work they deliver. Become the first port of call for Procurement, Contract Management and Sustainability support and guidance.
• Lead on undertaking quotation and/or tender exercises to assist SU purchasers in procuring specific category requirements using the SU tendering process system or other means.
• Work with the SU Contract Administrators and contracted providers to strive for continuous improvement in contractor performance.
• Report on performance against known SU contracts and spending, including KPI scoring where applicable.
• You will work closely with the Director of Finance, Chief Executive and SU President to develop and deliver the organisation’s Sustainability Strategy, setting out a clear action plan for all departments to deliver our ambition to be the most sustainable Students’ Union, achieve net-zero in operations as soon as possible, and play a key role in educating students about sustainability.
• Develop a clear action plan to reduce the organisation’s Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to net-zero.
• You will liaise with Department Heads to agree clear action plans for each Department to reduce their environmental impact in line with the goals in the Sustainability Strategy, especially our Commercial Services team to transition to the sale of low carbon and sustainable products in their cafes, bars and shops.
Requirements:
• Professional qualifications in Supply Chain Management, Procurement or similar
• Experience of developing sustainability plans or actions for complex organisations
• Experience of the development and implementation of strategies related to sustainability and procurement
• Experience of achieving measurable reductions in costs and/or environmental impact through procurement or changes in business operations
• Strong knowledge of both sustainable procurement principles and wider global sustainability issues
• Experience working with external stakeholders
• Strong and persuasive communication skills
• An interest in education and student welfare
• A commitment to continuous improvement and professional development
